Guest Blog Kevin’s reflections after an IAP externship at a start-up company Dear friends and fellow CS people, My name is Kevin Wang and I’m currently a junior at MIT majoring in course VI-III. Melis has graciously offered me to write a guest blog, and I thought it was a great time to convey a few revelations I’ve had recently. This was adapted from an essay I wrote to a few of my friends, but I hope you find the material enlightening. This IAP, I was working for a startup named Xobni (http://www.xobni.com/) which was founded by my friend, Adam Smith. They got their start through the Y Combinator (http://www.ycombinator.com/) program, which is still in its infancy but quickly gaining momentum and recognition as a quality incubator. Startups have been something that Ive always been interested in, and, now after working for one, I am convinced that it is the right way to go. Ive been learning a great deal from my few weeks here, garnering small bits about what it takes to build a successful company from the ground up. The most import thing I’ve realized over the past month is that my focus in school has been wrong. During my first two and a half years at MIT, I’ve been spending considerable effort focusing on my grades. This is understandable, since at the time I didn’t have a clue as to what I wanted to do, so the safe thing was to buckle down and study. Looking back though, I believe my time could have been much better spent learning practical skills, such as becoming a better programmer and designer, and gaining experience with databases and servers. These are skills and tools that will be essential in building a successful startup, and I have been negligent of them. It’s interesting to note that a fair number of the young entrepreneurs around me are college dropouts (all out of volition to follow their dreams). It doesn’t take a straight A student to create a successful startupâ€"it takes someone with vision and practical know-how. That brings me to the first big ingredient: the idea. The idea is paramount. A company without a theme is like old-style canned soup without a can openerâ€"you just can’t get anywhere with it! “Well duh,” you say. You’re right, but let me explain. Adam Smith, the co-founder and lead developer of Xobni has been thinking about startups for many years now. His wrote his first email application when he was thirteen years old, and continued to hone his development skills since then, working on a plethora of personal projects for profit and experience. The email platform that Xobni is building was realized after spending a lot of his undergrad years at MIT thinking about opportunities where technology could address an issue present in our livesâ€"in this case, how to communicate more effectively via email. On top of that, hes spent much of his spare time reading about startups and how to make them work, especially the writings of Paul Graham, who Ill get to later. So clearly, you can tell Adam’s been brainstorming over startup ideas for many years now. But that’s not the only thing he’s been doing right. He’s also spent a fair share of his spare time improving his programming skills. How? The only way: writing code. Lots and lots of code. This is the second big ingredient: practical skills. Taking 6.046 this past semester was loads of fun and extremely interesting. However, out of all the development Ive ever done for a company (in my very limited experience, albeit), I have never had to use anything more complicated than a sorting algorithm. And of course, those are built into every modern day language haha. Trees? Forget about it, never touch em! Im not saying that things like 6.046 are a waste of time, but rather that it seems most of what they teach us in class brings us about 3% closer to real-life success in industry. Im writing a GUI right now for their application, and most of the issues I run into arent about how to solve a pr oblem, but rather how to solve problems caused by the language. Sorry, that was too pessimistic. Most of the issues Ive been running into are how to use the language at hand to help me solve the problem. Ive come to realize that being a good programmer is about 5% algorithms, 15% perseverance, 40% design [patterns], and 40% knowledge of a language, and its platform and libraries. I think most of us are fine with the first two, but in terms of the latter two, Id rate us as mostly abysmal. Its not that we dont have the capacity to learn. Its just that were not taught these things at school, and we dont spend substantial extra time on our own to learn them. Hence, we dont know jack about design patterns, and if you ask me a real Java or C# question, it’s unlikely that I could give you a satisfactory answer. In short, when it comes to programming skills that matter, we have no experience. We are noobies. As a quick example, did you know that scrollbars in C# never let the user scroll to their maximum theoretical value? Suppose you have a scrollbar whose minimum value is 0, maximum value is 100, and large change interval is 20 (equivalent to clicking in the blank space on a scrollbar). If the user grabs the slider and moves it as far as he or she can in the positive direction, the value your program will see when it checks the scrollbar value is not 100, but 100 â€" 20 + 1 = 81. This behavior is documented on MSDN, but is not immediately obvious or even intuitive. Alas, a day’s time was lost figuring this out. I guess what I’m saying is, modern languages like Java and C# that are very rich and powerful in their capabilities are also replete with nuances. Being efficient will actually require you to know many of the esoteric details of the platform, such as the aforementioned fact. If we ever hope to be run a successful startup, were going to need to know a language rock solid. We want C# to be a help, not a hindrance. To amend this, I will be tackling C# and Java in my spare time, as well as doing some reading about software design. But book learning only goes so far. I need to code more and work on large scale projects. Adam recommended contributing to an open source project, which is a great idea. I urge all of you to join me in this endeavor. I know this has been long, but please stick with me. The last part of my rant is about a guy named Paul Graham. Paul is a fellow computer scientist, much like you or I. Unlike you or I, he is a multi-millionaire. He got his start as a Lisp hacker (hes big on Lisp), and started a company called Viaweb, the first platform of its kind that lets you build your own online shop. You could say that every online store you see nowadays (which is no doubt ubiquitous), stems from the original work that Paul did. Or rather, Paul had the vision for a new service that would cause a paradigm shift in the way people transact business. Maybe Im being overstating facts, but you get the idea. I want to tell you about Paul, because Paul is our friend. Paul has vast stores of experience. Paul can help us. He maintains a site that I strongly urge, no, that I ask you to drink earnestly from, to imbibe. http://www.paulgraham.com/. There are three main sections of interest. 1. Essays (http://www.paulgraham.com/articles.html). This is probably the most important. Here, Paul shares much of his wisdom about startups, programming, technology, success, and life. He’s a good writer, and he has great insights. A quick glance at the essay titles and you may begin to see the value of the content. They topics range from technical to business, which is great because I think most of us are too enamored of the tech side to even consider the equally important business side of things. I’m planning on attacking these essays vociferously over the coming semester, and I’d love to talk with many of you about the issues he brings up. 2. FAQs (http://www.paulgraham.com/faq.html) In particular, I’d recommend the Programming and Startup FAQS. They’re sort of like his essays, but containing only a few morsels and nuggets of goodness. Nevertheless, appetizers are served. Eat up! 3. Lastly, and important in another sense, is the Y Combinator (http://ycombinator.com/). You may remember the “Y Combinator” from 6.001 and Scheme. As they succinctly state in their FAQ: “[The Y Combinator is] a program that runs programs; were a company that helps start companies.” Basically, Paul (and a team of other noteworthy individuals) have come together to build a new type of seed funding company. They provide initial funding, classes, advice, and connections to help young startups (*cough* us in the future? *cough*) get off the runway. It’s hard to get their support though. They get hundreds of applications every year from teams with ideas, and they only accept about ten or so into that year’s Y Combinator Class. Xobni made the cut for the Class of 2006 (Y Combinator’s second year), but we can be sure that competition will grow as the program gains popularity and prestige, and as more people hear about it. Right now, Xobni is doing wellâ€"as I’m writing this, they’re finishing the touches on deal with a crème of the crop Venture Capitalist in Silicon Valley to expand and hire. This is where we want to be 2-4 years down the line. As a mental exercise, take a quick peek at their (very open ended) application. They ask pretty deep questions, so when we apply, we’d better have our act together. What do you understand about your business that other companies in it just dont get? What are people forced to do now because what you plan to make doesnt exist yet? How will you make money? Who are your competitors, and who might become competitors? Who do you fear most? For founders who are hackers: what cool things have you built? (Include urls if possible.) The purpose of this message was fivefold. First, I wanted to share my experience with you, to explain to the sources of my views on programming, startups, and success. Second, I wanted to highlight what I see as deficiencies that I have (and perhaps some of you share) in terms of real programming ability and experience. I do this, of course, so that we may improve our weaknesses once we have identified them. Third, I wanted to introduce you guys to important literature and ideas that I think you should be aware of. Reading those essays by Paul Graham and always thinking about startup ideas will no doubt prove invaluable in the future. Fourth, I wanted to highlight the characteristics that I would expect of myself and fellow cofounders of a startup. We need to be well versed and knowledgeable in one if not many languages, and our design skills must be strong. The only ways we can achieve this is through experience codingâ€"we need to find projects to work on in the meantime. Not only that, we will need experience in dealing with databases, servers, development platforms, and operating systems. I’ll be the first to admit that my knowledge of these topics is next nothing, but that will change with time. I hope those of you who are serious about startups in the future will work on improving your programming and practical skills, as I will. Lastly, I wanted to inspire you! Doing a startup is a fun, rewarding experience, with the potential to make us very well off! Even if you fail, you’ll have learned valuable lessons and gained a great deal of confidence in your abilities, whether you were working on software or business development. More than that though, I think we’re a smart group of people who actually have a good shot at doing something fantastic and making a large impact in the way people live their lives in the future. From this came the inspiration for the famous play An Inspector Calls where it is made openly known about the hardship and poverty of working class families in the early 1900s. I believe that Playwrights main intention when writing the play An Inspector calls was to show and teach us how society in Edwardian times was so cruel, he tells us about the horrible suicide of a young working class girl Eva Smith and how an upper class family came to play such major parts in the events leading up to her death. The play opens on the Birling family all happily gathered around their dining table celebrating the recent engagement of Sheila Birling and Gerald Croft. There was a carefree atmosphere and all was well. The Birlings appeared to be an upper class family as it was stated that they were all wearing the finest garments of the period (Act 1 page 1). Priestley was setting the scene for the play, trying to set the emphasis on the family being warm and welcoming. The characters Mr Birling and the Inspector are considerably different from one another I think that playwrights intention for this was to show a better contrast. Mr Birling is perceived to be a very pompous and greedy man whereas the inspector is open, honest and somewhat more considerate than that of the Birlings. Mr Birlings interest in his family and business are very clear he doesnt even give off an indication that he ever considers anyone else we can see this in (Act 1 Pages 9 and 10). A man has to mind his own business and look after himself and his own. This is a point where priestly is trying to show the audience how awfully selfish Mr Birling actually is, as a result of what playwright is saying the audience will now be gradually going against him for such a manner as his, he showed very little interest as to what the inspector had to say and was so convinced that he had no part to play in Evas death that he tried to justify himself by blaming the poor girl herself. A quote of this can be found in (Act 1 Page 13). I dismissed her nearly two years ago, it obviously has nothing to do with this wretched girls suicide! Throughout the majority of this play a lot of Dramatic Irony is used. Mr Birlings illusions are prime examples. If we dont then it will all result in war, as a result of the Birlings selfishness one girl has lost her life. In order to make Priestleys point be reached by the audience his speech will have been given in a slow yet dominating tone so that the audience really feel the full effect of what the inspector was saying, it may also give them an idea as to whether they do agree in what he is saying or whether they feel that he is out of order as Mr Birling did. After the inspector finishes his speech and leaves the scene, then and only then do we begin to see the true personalities of each character. They all then try to put the nights events behind them and try to think of a way that they can cover up the mess that they are in, in order to keep themselves from any unwanted bad press. The only person that I feel was truly affected in anyway by what the inspector had to say was Sheila. I feel this way as at the beginning of the play she acts somewhat immature as if she was a child, however after the nights events unfold she seems to considerably mature and is the only one willing to face up to the fact that she is actually partially to blame for the death of Eva Smith/Daisy Renton. I think that Priestley wrote the play this way as he intended for us to see that we should all try to be mature and act responsibly as Sheila did and not to be like that of the Birling Family and if we are we may need to be more considerate and caring towards others A quotation taken from the inspectors last speech sums up priestleys intentions perfectly I think.

Banning Books Banning Books Our freedom is under attack! Censorship is clearly an attack on our freedom. There are a number of books that are banned or challenged that are great books, such as The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck or The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. These books are classics. Banning these books robs students of great literature. Censorship of books in secondary schools should not be allowed. The list of books that have been banned completely in many schools across the nation is expansive, and so are the reasons that parents and schoolboards give for banning these books. Advocates of literary censorship say that it's best for the students. Opponents say that it is detrimental to the educational system. The students have mixed emotions. Literary censorship at the secondary school level is indeed very widespread. One of the most controversial books is Huckleberry Finn, which is currently under fire by the Pennsylvania Chapter of the NAACP because it contains the word ?nigger? 39 times in the first 35 pages. They feel that the liberal use of such a derogatory word is detrimental to the self-esteem of young African-American children. The NAACP says that they want the book removed from required-reading lists, but they are not out to censor it (Campbell, par. 4). Large groups such as the NAACP are not the only people pushing for Huckleberry Finn's banning in America's schools. Small groups of parents have protested the book's status as required reading in their children's schools because of its language. Huckleberry Finn isn't the only book targeted by parents. Another frequently challenged book is Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. This book was handed out at an Irvine, California, middle school in 1992 with profane words such as ?damn? and ?hell? blocked out. Students wrote to Bradbury describing the situation and pointing out the irony that a book about the evils of censorship had to be censored before they could read it. The books were soon replaced with uncensored ones (Campbell, par. 27). The Catcher in the Rye was challenged in several school districts nationwide because of the liberal use of slang and obscene words that author J.D. Sallinger used to make the book more realistic. Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird has been banned in several secondary schools for containing racist slurs. Some readers felt that the book portrayed Negroes as barbarians and criminals. The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare was banned in a secondary school in Midland, Michigan, because a small group of parents felt that the character Shylock projected a negative image of Jews. Another Shakespeare classic, Twelfth Night, was banned in Merrimak, NH schools in 1996 after a prohibition of alternative lifestyle instruction act was passed by the school board. Other Shakespearean works have been challenged in various schools in America because parents and administrators felt that some characters project a homosexual image (Banned, par.7). Every person who is involved in debate over literary censorship believes that he or she is doing the right thing for the students. The advocates of literary censorship believe that exposing children to such material as Huckleberry Finn in high school will contaminate their minds with racist garbage at a time in their lives when they are searching for things to believe in. Opponents see the banning of Huckleberry Finn in many schools a form of censorship that will teach children that speaking their minds is not a good thing to do (Campbell, par. 8). However, the debate over literary censorship in schools is not a debate over whether or not literature should be censored at all. Most parents, teachers, and administrators would agree that censorship is necessary to maintain a good environment for learning. The debate is over whether or not to draw the line at Huckleberry Finn. If the book was good twenty years ago, then why all of a sudden is it not good for students to read anymore? A Virtual Team at T. A. Stearns

Tom Andrews, Cy Crane, Marge Dector and Megan Harris are all part of a team because they cooperatively work towards the success of their small organization through the realization of their common goals and interests.Although their immediate common denominator is being part of a group that T.A. Stearns relies on for innovative programming, each member’s desire to have lenient working hours and flexible working space also gels them together to work cohesively. In fact, they have already stepped beyond working relations into the grounds of true friendship because they have learned to cover up for each other’s misgivings to be able to achieve their aims and goals.2. Has anyone in this case acted unethically?All of them, without any exception, violated their company’s trust.   This was done by concealing their new work innovation that gave them additional hours for personal time.Although it can be said that they have saved the company money by not asking for their r eward for another brilliant time-saving invention, what they have done is like stealing. The company could have saved more money by lessening their working hours but they let the company pay them unknowingly.3. What, if any, characteristics of groupthink are manifested in the work team?One of the indicators that the virtual team was already suffering from groupthink is their high moral stance. The members believed that they could cover up their â€Å"time cheating strategy† and collectively assumed that it was okay to keep their innovation a secret so that they can have more time to themselves.They even worked together to plan out how they can deceive their company by coordinating on their reports and schedules.   The team had begun to think that they were smarter than their bosses.Another indicator of group think was their arrogance regarding their working style.   The group had taken pride in their ability to have flexible time and working space compared to most people but this should not have given them the reason to scoff at those who have chosen to work differently.The most obvious indicator of group think is their move to keep information even from their leader.4. Has Dave been an effective team leader?Yes he has for he was very observant of his team.   He knew the members fairly enough to judge that there was something amiss and that he needed to get to the bottom of it right away. He was also a good leader because he immediately discussed his concerns with Cy.5. What should Dave do now?Dave would have to reveal the virtual team’s new discovery to upper management before the executives hear it through the grapevine. If I were in his shoes, I would reveal the innovation by presenting it as something the virtual team had experimented on for some time to ensure its effectiveness.   This way, Dave not only saves his virtual team but also gets a probable pat in the back from management for doing a good job.

This means that because of the lack of discipline, the students of the secondary school level face the challenges of being misaligned when it comes to their focus and at some point become highly attracted to drugs and violence.This is the fact when it comes to school procedures. What are the elements that are so far affecting the vision of the students t owards their achievements in school as well as towards their future? †¢ How are drugs and violence related to the effects of lack of discipline among students? To reduce the number of guns in schools, officials are using metal detectors, surveillance cameras, specially trained dogs to sniff out guns, locker sweeps, identification tags, and a prohibition against bringing book bags to school. The second section is composed of 30 questions that are focused upon the social connection of the students with their peers, their teachers and other elemental factors in the society that may affect their behaviors towards their studies and their dealings in school.The third part is composed of fiv e personal questions that asks the students how they view discipline and how they would react to certain situations in school. This section would require the students to answer in paragraphs; while the other sections are multiple choices between (first section) frequently, seldom, never and the choices yes and no for the second part. 3. 2 Respondents The questionnaires are to ask for the gender of the respondents to be able to separate the results. By being able to do so, it is also expected that the implementation of the suggested solution to the problems discussed through the context of this study be further applied in educational institutions.Section 4: Conclusion To be able to end the presentation of the problem being discussed in this paper, the researcher plans to present a five-point based summary that would help the readers understand the study deeply after reading the whole context of the research.
